Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) vetoed a bill that would have established sweeping regulations on artificial intelligence, but he vowed to push forward with crafting a law putting guardrails on the emerging technology.

Newsom's vetoing of California's AI safety bill, SB 1047, has prompted backlash from AI safety advocates and the entertainment industry alike.

The bill was backed by Tesla CEO Elon Musk; San Francisco-based Anthropic, one of the leading AI developers; and Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, early developers of the technology who are known as two of the “godfathers of AI.” It also had support from the broader public, according to a YouGov poll commissioned by one of the bill’s sponsors.
