Hurricane Helene wrecked the community of Vilas in Watauga County. From the air, we saw several mudslides. The rain washed away a couple of sheds on a property, sliding them down the mountain. We saw two different roads washed out and what appears to be a driveway that was wiped out in another area.

Hurricane Helene has caused significant damage to Watauga County homes, roads and buildings. Schools have been closed this week as a result, but it may be a long time before some of them reopen.

After much of SWFL weathered Hurricane Helene, Lee County is initiating a major cleanup effort in response to storm surge flooding.

Hurricane Helene spared Southwest Florida a direct hit but caused significant flooding and damage across Lee County.
