California Governor Gavin Newsom has vetoed what would have become one of the most comprehensive policies governing the safety of AI in the U.S.

The bill, which would have been the first AI law in the US, would have required tech companies to test models and provided whistleblower protections to workers.

As lawmakers seek more robust safeguards, Newsom introduced expert-led initiatives to balance AI innovation with risk mitigation in critical infrastructure.
