Los Angeles County is taking on Pepsi and Coke for their role in plastic pollution. In a lawsuit filed Wednesday, the county alleged PepsiCo and Coca-Cola companies have misled the public about the recyclability of their plastic bottles and downplayed the negative impacts of plastic disposal.

Coke and Pepsi need to stop the deception and take responsibility for the plastic pollution problems your products are causing,” said Supervisor Lindsey Horvath.

Los Angeles County has filed a lawsuit against PepsiCo and The Coca-Cola Co. alleging their “significant role” in plastic pollution’s negative impacts on the environment and public health, as well as misrepresentations to the public surrounding the recyclability of plastic beverage containers and a failure to disclose environmental and health harms associated with the use of those containers.

More than 400 million tons of plastic waste are produced globally every year, with less than 10% being recycled, according to the UN Environment Programme.

PepsiCo and Coca-Cola are being sued by Los Angeles County over their plastic bottles and allegations of harm to the environment. The lawsuit, filed Wednesday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, accuses the soda companies of misleading consumers about their ability to recycle their bottles.

A New York State judge has tossed out a lawsuit against PepsiCo that sought to hold the company accountable for plastic pollution in the Buffalo River and chided Democratic Attorney General Leticia James for "policy idealism" by filing the legal challenge.

Attorney General Letitia James filed a claim last year alleging the Mountain Dew maker had polluted the local Buffalo River with its single-use plastic products.
