Top Justice Department antitrust officials have decided to ask a judge to force Alphabet Inc.’s Google to sell off its Chrome browser in what would be a historic crackdown on one of the world’s biggest tech companies.

The recommendation from the DOJ to federal judge Amit Mehta, according to the report, would be one step that Google will take. The DOJ is also reportedly seeking changes related to the company's AI and Android businesses. The request would also include new data-licensing requirements for Google.

"Kanter’s fantastical remedies like Chrome divestiture and AI opt-outs have no connection to the Justice Department’s original case, and requiring Google to share data with rivals will only make Google search worse for consumers," Kovacevich said, predicting the proposed remedies won't "hold up in court.”
