The Hall of Fame’s Classic Baseball Era Committee considers players, managers, umpires and executives who made their greatest impact before 1980. That’s a huge swath of the sport’s history — more than a century — so simply reaching the ballot is an achievement.

Luis Tiant, who passed away last month at the age of 83, was chosen as a finalist by the Classic Baseball Era committee for election to the Hall of Fame. The winner(s) will be announced next month.

At least 12 of 16 votes are needed for induction, and the results of the balloting will be revealed on Dec. 8.
